| BACKGROUND |
Karen’s background is in fine art photography. She graduated with a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA from the Yale School of Art, both in photography. She fills a need for a niche market in which she brings to portraiture and events such as weddings the subtle art of fine art photography. Karen’s technical background is based in film and film cameras. Film camera lenses are softer then digital lenses and better capture a sense of beauty and emotional content that she finds to be truer to real life. She understands how film captures emotional content, “it has more depth”, she feels, “and as a tool, it captures more of a feeling. I like working with both film and digital, each medium has very strong elements that I love”. Over the past few years, Karen has added an important photographic and personal partnership to her studio with her husband Frank Marshal. Together they form a unique working vision. Frank’s background is in fashion and fine art photography. He studied at Penn State University and has worked in the photography industry for many years both as a photographer and as a B&W Master Printer for such fashion icons as Avedon and Bruce Weber. He brings his immense talent to the studio and is a perfect compliment to Karen’s style. His portraits have an iconic and timeless quality. |
